Spotlight on Spandana Durbha, Information Security and Operations Manager at C2 Risk.
In honour of International Women’s Month in March, we’re focusing on women in the industry. Here’s a ‘Meet the Team’ spotlight on Spandana Durbha, Information Security and Operations Manager at C2 Risk.
How long have you been working with C2 Risk?
Since January 2023.
Tell us a bit about your background and what led you to join C2 Risk, especially as a woman in the tech and risk management field?
I have always been intrigued by how interconnected systems operate and, more importantly, where their vulnerabilities lie. During my university studies, I focused on the offensive side of cybersecurity, gaining valuable insight into how systems could be tested, broken, and improved. This experience naturally progressed into my role at Uber, where I was able to analyse how real-world threat actors exploit weaknesses within platforms. Now, at C2 Risk, I have the opportunity to apply that knowledge from the other side of the table — working to defend and strengthen systems against those same threats. Having been on both the offensive and defensive sides of cybersecurity has given me a well-rounded perspective, and it’s incredibly rewarding to use that experience to build safer, more resilient environments for our clients.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the Risk Management field?
I’ve always been fascinated by problem-solving and finding ways to protect people and systems from threats. My early experiences handling fraud and account security showed me how critical risk management is in keeping businesses secure, and from there, I was hooked.
What aspects of working in the risk management or tech industry do you enjoy most, and how has your experience shaped your career journey?
I love how no two days are ever the same. There’s always a new challenge to tackle or a system to improve. The constant evolution of the industry has pushed me to stay sharp, keep learning, and adapt quickly. It’s shaped me into someone who thrives in high-pressure environments and enjoys creating proactive solutions.
How has C2 Risk supported your professional growth, particularly as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry?
C2 Risk has been incredibly supportive by giving me opportunities to lead, innovate, and contribute directly to the company’s success. What I appreciate most is the recognition of diverse perspectives — they don’t just include women at the table; they genuinely listen and value our insights.
In your opinion, what unique strengths or perspectives do women bring to the risk management or tech industry, and how does C2 Risk reflect that in its workplace culture?
Women often bring a collaborative mindset, emotional intelligence, and a big-picture approach to problem-solving — all of which are essential in risk management. C2 Risk actively cultivates a workplace where these qualities are appreciated, and that makes a huge difference in both culture and outcomes.
As a woman in the industry, do you have any challenges you’ve overcome that you’d like to share with others looking to pursue a similar career?
Imposter syndrome was definitely something I had to overcome. Early on, I sometimes questioned if I belonged in rooms full of experienced professionals. Over time, I’ve learned to trust my expertise, speak up confidently, and remind myself that my knowledge and perspective add real value.
Do you have any fun, surprising facts you can share about yourself, or any accomplishments?
Despite being fun-sized (read: pretty short), I’m surprisingly great at basketball! I even played at the national level in India. On top of that, I’m a huge dance enthusiast. I’ve learned seven different styles so far and am always on the lookout for the next one to add to my list. Safe to say, if there’s music or a court nearby, I’m in my element!
What’s your favourite part about working with the team at C2 Risk?
The collaboration. Everyone is genuinely invested in sharing ideas, solving problems together, and supporting one another. It makes coming to work really rewarding.
What’s the best way to start your day – coffee, tea, or something else?
Tea, of course — preferably a strong, spiced chai — with some Bob Marley playing in the background to set the perfect mood for the day.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?
It’s usually a toss-up between getting lost in a good serial killer documentary (the more chilling, the better) or grabbing my hula hoop and unwinding with some spins. Balance, right?
What’s the most rewarding part of your role at C2 Risk?
Knowing that the work we do directly protects people, businesses, and their data. There’s a real sense of purpose in making sure the systems people rely on are secure.
What’s something you’ve learned recently at work that you didn’t know before, and how does this contribute to your growth as a woman in the industry?
Recently, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how critical clear communication is when translating complex security risks into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders. It’s one thing to identify a vulnerability, but it’s another to present it in a way that resonates with business leaders and drives meaningful decisions. Strengthening this skill has been a game-changer in my growth, particularly as a woman in the industry, because it has allowed me to build more influence in the room, lead with confidence, and ensure that my voice — and the importance of security — is heard at every level.
What advice would you give your younger self as you advanced in your career?
Don’t shrink yourself. Take up space, share your ideas, and remember that you earned your seat at the table.
What advice would you give to other women seeking a career in the sector?
Go for it. Build your knowledge, find mentors, and don’t let stereotypes hold you back. The industry needs your perspective and talent now more than ever.
